Dawson Storms Ball High

While the Ball High Tornadoes produced only a slight breeze against the Dawson Eagles, it would be Mother Nature who would end the game prematurely with rain and lightning as the game between the two 24-4A foes would come to a 41-7 end with time still left on the clock in the final period.

The outcome was already a decided fact as Dawson ended any playoff hopes for the Tors (2-7, 2-4) to extend their season.

Dawson regrouped after their loss to Friendswood to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in district.

As he has done all season, Dawson junior running back Brett Winnegan proved to be unstoppable as he carried the ball 22 times for 207 yards and four touchdowns scoring on runs of 4, 3, 57 while hauling in a pass from QB Ross Wicklund for a 45-yard touchdown.

The Winnegan scored the games first touchdown on a 4-yard run with 7:57 left in the opening period to set in motion four consecutive touchdowns and a 27-0 lead before the Tors were able to answer with their only touchdown.

Bryce Johnson, who has been another talented ball carrier this season for the Eagles, scored the second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run and a 14-0 advantage.

Winnegan closed out the first half with a 3-yard run at the 6:24 mark giving the Eagles a 20-0 halftime lead.

Dawson received the second half kickoff  and it took less than a minute for Winnegan to get loose on a 57-yard scoring jaunt to make the score 27-0 at the 11:01 mark.

Ball High showed a spark of life on their first possession of the second half as Greg Jones-Rollins scored on a 21-yard pass from QB Jacob Simon. The PAT was good leaving the score at 27-7.

However, the Dawson defense would step up the pressure and that would be all the scoring for the Tors.

Dawson added two more touchdowns in the third quarter as Winnegan gathered in a pass from Wicklund covering 45-yards and Brandon Guzman swiped a pass and returned it 61-yards for the final touchdown of the game giving the Eagles the 41-7 victory.

Dawson compiled 486 yards of total offense while the defense limited the Tors to only 205 total yards.

Winnegan finished with 207 rushing yards and three touchdowns while he also caught three passes for 55 more yards and another score.

Wicklund hit 7-of-11 passing for 121 yards with one TD and one INT.

The Eagles also produced a balanced rushing attack as Johnson had 10 carries for 57 yards and one score. Trey Miller had six carries for 30 yards. Drake Rainer had four totes for 29 yards. Tony Upchurch had five carries for 19 yards. Tyler Jasmine had three carries for 15 yards and Vance Galloway had two totes for eight yards.

Dawson will close out the regular season by traveling to Galena Park ISD Stadium to face the Galena Park Yellowjackets on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m.
