Junior QB Brandon Sargent was almost perfect hitting 12-of-14 passing for 159 yards and two touchdowns while the Mustangs presented a balanced ground attack in the 44-14 rout over Baytown Lee to improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in district action.
There was no question as to the outcome of this contest as Friendswood honored their seniors in their final home game of the season which also featured a downpour of rain at the end of the contest.
But the inclement weather wasn’t enough to stop the overpowering Friendswood offense and defense that held the Ganders to only 249 total yards while posting 424 total yards.
Friendswood got on the board early and often in the first half as Tyler Page caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Sargent with 8:44 left in the opening period. Garon Stewart hit the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
Friendswood got a safety by Sean White at the 6:20 mark for a 9-0 advantage.
Three minutes later, Sam Longbotham rammed in a 5-yard run to make the score 16-0.
The Ganders finally got on the scoreboard as Jacoby Fountain scored on a 75-yard bomb from QB PJ Leonce to cut the lead to 16-6 after the PAT missed the mark.
Early in the second quarter, Longbotham scored again on a 3-yard plunge to increase the margin to 23-6.
Friendswood scored on their next possession as Slade Holle, who has been one of Sargent’s top targets this year, hauled in a 38-yard scoring strike with 5:15 left before intermission to make the score 30-6.
James Richardson added one more score before halftime as he scored on a 5-yard run. Stewart hit the mark for a 37-6 lead.
The Mustangs added only one more score in the second half as Nick Flores scored on an 18-yard run with 7:27 left in the game.
The Ganders scored their final touchdown on a Leo Cedeno 22-yard run at the 5:29 mark. Lee scored a two-point conversion to post the 44-14 final score.
Friendswood’s Jake Blumrick saw some time at quarterback hitting 4-of-10 passing for 43 yards.
Richardson led the ground attack with 10 carries for 63 yards and one score. Jonah Vandersypen had 10 totes for 47 yards. Longbotham had eight carries for 45 yards and two TDs. Flores had four carries for 23 yards and one score.
Holle caught three passes for 68 yards and one score. Colin Faulk had three grabs for 31 yards. Ryan Bertelsman had two catches for 25 yards. Page had two catches for 24 yards and one score. Eric Loll had three grabs for 25 yards.
Friendswood will close out the regular season on Friday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Ball High to face the Golden Tornadoes (2-7, 2-4) who is out of the running for a playoff spot.
Texas City, Friendswood, and Dawson have clinched their place in the post-season while Goose Creek Memorial will get the nod for the fourth playoff slot with a win over Santa Fe. Galena Park will have to beat Dawson to have any playoff hopes, which is unlikely to be the case.
