Pearland Cruises Past Dobie 38-7

Pearland and Dobie entered their District 22-5A showdown tied for second in the league standings with 5-1 records. Both had already punched their ticket to the post-season, but the outcome of this contest determined who would be the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A Region III Div. I playoffs.

The winner would play Deer Park while the loser would face North Shore so this game was very important in setting the path for the playoffs.

Pearland got the 38-7 win and will face Deer Park on Friday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Pasadena Veterans Stadium.

Both teams were slow getting out of the blocks in a battle between the defenses.

The Oilers finally found some momentum and scored on a 10-yard run by JaColbie Butler with only 34 seconds left in the opening period. Nicholas Keller booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

With 1:52 left in the second quarter, Dobie got on the scoreboard on an 11-yard pass from QB Joe Gonzalez to Darius Simmons to knot up the game at 7-7.

Pearland got the ball back at their own 34 with 1:51 left before intermission. A pass from QB Kalen Johnson to Carter Jefferson picked up 12 yards. On the next play, Dobie was called for pass interference giving the Oilers a first down at the Dobie 37.

Butler got the call on the next play and he raced 37-yards for another Pearland touchdown and a 14-7 lead at halftime.

The Oiler defense took over the second half and didn’t allow the Longhorns to score again.

Pearland added 24 unanswered points to clam the 38-7 victory.

Keller booted a 27-yard field goal on Pearland’s first possession in the third quarter.

With 1:41 left in the third quarter, Ryan Diaz got behind the Dobie secondary and Johnson lofted a beautiful pass in step with Diaz to complete a 64-yard scoring bomb and a 24-7.

Jacoby Lewis found the end zone on a 14-yard run to increase the lead to 31-7 and then with only 1:23 left in the game, Zach Boegler ran through the middle of the Dobie defense and found an opening to complete a 31-yard scoring run.

Pearland had 378 total yards while Dobie was limited to 166 total yards.

Johnson hit 10-of-17 passing for 159 yards with one TD and on interception. Conner Heath was 1-of-2 for nine yards.

Butler had 80 yards rushing on eight carries and two TDs. Boegler had four totes for 44 yards and one score. Hayden Cole had nine carries for 36 yards. Lewis had two carries for 29 yards and one score.

Diaz had one catch for 64 yards and one touchdown. Jefferson had two grabs for 49 yards while Lewis had three catches for 22 yards.
