Arbor Day in Pearland

In Lifestyle by Reporter News

The first Arbor Day, founded by J. Sterling Morton, was celebrated in 1872 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, with an estimated 1 million trees planted on that day. Arbor Day celebrates the importance of trees as an integral component of the natural landscape because of their prevention of erosion and the provision of a weather-sheltered ecosystem in and under their foliage. Trees play an important role in producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures.

In 2013, during the 83rd Texas Legislative Session the passing of new legislation, H.B. 419, authored by Rep. Farias recognized the first Friday in November as Texas Arbor Day, as opposed to the last Friday in April when Arbor Day was previously celebrated in Texas.

Keep Pearland Beautiful will continue the tradition of celebrating Arbor Day in 2014, though not on the first Friday in November. In celebration of Arbor Day in Pearland, Keep Pearland Beautiful will be giving away the following native and adaptive seedlings at both the Pearland Community Center and the Westside Event Center from 8:00AM – 12:00PM on Saturday January 11, 2014: Swamp Chestnut, Southern Crabapple, Pawpaw, Laurel Oak, American Beauty Berry and Pecan Tree. The seedlings are free to Pearland residents (two per family), but donations are always welcome.

Keep America Beautiful has also launched a National Planting Day campaign, which celebrates the value and power of native and adaptive species in restoring ecological balance to the environment while creating greener, more beautiful communities. Keep Pearland Beautiful hosted an event at the Pearland Community Gardens on August 29, 2013 in recognition of National Planting Day, where over 30 volunteers planted 5 native and adaptive trees.
