Louise H. Taunton, 96, a 52 year resident of Friendswood-Alvin, Texas passed away Monday, April 28, 2014.
She was born February 20, 1918 in White County, Illinois to Leona (Lutz) and William Carl Hubele. Upon graduation from high school, Louise attended Southern Illinois University where she received a teaching certificate. Growing up on a farm in a small farming community, she returned to her hometown to begin her teaching career in a one room school, teaching all grades. In 1940, she married Lester Taunton an after he returned from serving in World War II, they moved to El Dorado, Arkansas, living there and teaching at the First Baptist Church.
Moving to Alvin in 1962 she completed her degree at the University of Houston earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Louise was a teacher in Alvin at the First Baptist Church where she helped to initiate the kindergarten program and later moving to assist in the setup of the kindergarten program for the Friendswood School District. She taught kindergarten in Friendswood until her retirement in 1981. She moved to Friendswood in 1995.
Louise was a member of the Friendswood United Methodist Church and the Ruth Circle. She was an avid bridge player belonging to several bridge groups in the Friendswood-Alvin area. She also enjoyed reading, especially the classics and Jane Austen, traveling to Europe and in the US and dining out with friends and family.
Survivors include a son, John W. Taunton and wife Joann of Austin, Texas; daughters, Martha Taunton of Amherst, MA and Emily Taunton Ross and husband, Charles of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Jack Taunton, Adrienne Taunton White, Jennifer O’Brien Vargas, Suyin Taunton and Megan Ross; three great grandsons, Cameron White, Ethan and Gavin Vargas; and many beloved nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Laurie Purcell officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 17, 2014 following the service at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home in Friendswood, Texas.
