It was the 400-meter relay team that delivered one of the evening’s more memorable performances at the Class 4A state track meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.
Texas City and Pearland Dawson were in a battle for gold as Texas City’s Melicha Smith and Dawson’s Erica Davis took the baton of the final leg of the relay. Smith held off Davis in a near photo finish in the final 100 meters as Texas City took first place with a time of 46.67 seconds, a mere .10 seconds better than the Lady Eagles. Texas City won gold and Dawson picked up the silver.
The Dawson girls set a new school record with the 46.77 time.
While Dawson captured the District 24-4A crown, the Lady Stings finished second in the state with 48 points while Dallas Lancaster took home the state title with a two-point difference of 50 points.
