Local Family Seeks National Title of “Most Playful”

In Lifestyle, News by Reporter News

Family “dance parties” and trampoline time are routine for one Pearland family that’s now in the running for the most playful in the country.

In a video submitted to the contest and now on YouTube, the Holloman family – using homemade costumes and props – emphasizes using imagination to perk up even the most mundane tasks and create opportunities for learning.

They are now one of 10 finalists in 10 different cities across the U.S. Vying for the title of Most Playful Family, a contest held by KaBOOM!, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that helps communities build playgrounds for children.

Wes Holloman says one of their best recent investments has been a trampoline.

“The whole family loves to jump and make up imaginative games for hours,” he said. “We also ride our bikes and scooters to the neighborhood park to play or throw the football.”

The family faces tough competition from all across the country. From one family that created a Kaleidoscope Play Studio to a clan on a mission to visit every park in their hometown.

Celebrity judges, including Star of ABC’s hit sitcom “Modern Family,” Rico Rodriguez and sister, actress Raini Rodriguez from Disney Channel’s “Austin & Ally,” along with Olympic Gold Medalist Joss Christensen, ESPN SportsCenter anchor Jay Harris, are reviewing videos and putting in their votes. The grand prize winner, to be announced in two weeks, will receive a trip to Disney World or Disneyland resort.

KaBOOM CEO and Founder Darell Hammond said the contest is designed to recognize families who lead by example and instill the message that play matters.

“Not just as an activity for kids but as an activity for the family,” Hammond states. “We hope that through this contest, more families will be inspired to engage in active play, together.”
“We do not let our crazy, hectic schedules stop us from playing,” Wes Holloman explains. “While running errands we will pretend we are horses galloping to the store or spies jumping over the special traps set on the yellow lines (parking lot lines).”

The first round of entries was held January through March, with the second round beginning April 1 with 50 semi-finalists recording a video documenting why their family is the most lively of them all.
