Kermit Eugene Parker, 95, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at his home in Friendswood, Texas. Kermit loved his family and was always ready for visits from his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He kept his sense of humor throughout his lifetime up until his last days. Kermit loved his church and Bible Study and continued as long as he was physically able. Another love of his life was the game of golf. He continued playing until open-heart surgery weakened his swing at the age of 86. He achieved two hole-in-ones during his golfing career.
Kermit was born on May 17, 1919 in Cullman, Alabama to Noah and Rutha Parker. He married Marcella Harris on December 24, 1939 in Columbia, Tennessee. On May 27, 1943 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the 141st Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in the European Theater where he received three Bronze Stars. Kermit was honorably discharged on February 3, 1946.
He drove a city bus after returning from the war. He and Marcella had two children while living in Alabama – Kermit Eugene Parker Jr. and Kay Parker.
Kermit and Marcella moved to Houston on October 31, 1955. Kermit began working for Shelby Dinettes as a long distance truck driver. During this time they were active members of Second Baptist Church of Jacinto City. It was at Second Baptist that Kermit accepted Christ as his Savior on August 26, 1960 and was baptized on August 27. In 1973, he opened Budget Dinette Furniture where he worked until retirement in 1981. Upon retirement, Kermit and Marcella moved to Indian Shores golfing community in Crosby, Texas, where they lived for 15 years.
In 1997, Marcella and Kermit moved to Friendswood, Texas and became active at First Baptist Church of Friendswood. In December, 2009, Marcella passed away of a stroke at the age of 87.
Kermit is survived by his two sisters, Vergie Sullivan Doss of Augusta, South Carolina and Flora Sullivan Dolan of Decatur, Alabama; son, Kermit Eugene Parker, Jr. and wife Diane of The Woodlands; daughter, Kay Tucker and husband Paul of Friendswood; grandchildren, Dave Parker and wife Lynn of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jeff Parker of Austin, Jonathon Tucker of League City, Sarah Rogers and husband Caylon of Friendswood, and Mark Tucker of Friendswood; great grandchildren Kaleb Parker, Peyton Parker, and Madilyn Rogers.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546. Interment will follow at the Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, TX.
