An Alvin ISD junior high is partnering with The Links, Inc. Greater Pearland Chapter, for an afterschool program focusing on encouraging careers in STEM — or science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Nolan Ryan Junior High officials announced the campus had been selected to provide a “Smart STEMulation Academy” for its 7th and 8th grade students. The programs is designed to expose students to STEM related fields, increase interest and promote advocacy for both parents and students about education and career pathways.

Nolan Ryan Junior High Principal Christina Lovette said the program is an exciting opportunity.
“We are working daily to develop outstanding citizens,” she said, “and this is just another way we are preparing students to be productive and successful global leaders.”

Various enrichment activities provided by the program include student projects, college tours and a speakers bureau. Participants also receive mentoring and coaching from leaders in STEM as well as opportunities to correspond with students in other countries.

“It is our expectation that this program will not only promote and strengthen interest and aptitude in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Lovette said, “but will also expose and enable our young learners to interact with STEM related organizations and professionals; while providing them with real-world applications and experiences.”

Students meet on the last Wednesday of each month. Meetings consist of an hour of enrichment and two hours of instruction. Parent involvement is a required component of the program. The upcoming meeting, set Oct. 29, will feature NASA Astronaut and Engineer Stephanie Wilson.

Wilson’s appearance at the Alvin ISD campus, 11500 Shadow Creek Parkway, is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students and staff will attend, and parents and community members also are invited.
