As they have done all season, the Manvel Mavericks left no doubt they are one of the superior teams in the state after drubbing the Fort Bend Travis Tigers 76-23 in the area round of the Class 6A Region III Div. II playoffs.

Ever since the 2013 football season ended, head coach Kirk Martin, his coaching staff, and players have circled the date to get a re-match with the Katy Tigers in the 6A Region III Div. II finals after getting pounded 56-14 last year in the region finals.

However, the Mavericks will need to stayed focused as they will face Cypress Woods who beat the Katy Taylor Mustangs 63-17.

Manvel will play Cy-Woods on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Rice Stadium in the 6A region semifinals.

It didn’t take long for the Mavericks to quickly dispose of FB Travis as the Manvel outscored the Tigers 49-14 in the first half.

The Mavs only took :53 seconds to score in the opening quarter as quarterback Deriq King hit D’Vaughn Pennamon on a 12-yard scoring pass. Julius Montano booted the PAT for a quick 7-0 lead.

Manvel scored the second time they got the ball when King weaved his way past the Travis defenders for a 56-yard scoring run to make the score 14-0.

Travis finally answered in less than a minute as Spencer Griffin hauled in a 58-yard bomb from Cody Cunningham for a score cutting the lead to 21-7.

But Manvel continued with their offensive assault as Sean Dykes caught a 1-yard pass from King and then Qyalan Clay added two more scores on runs of 1 and 4 yards.

Brandon McCarty closed out the first half scoring for the Mavs on a 5-yard scoring plunge making the score 49-7.

With only :29 seconds showing on the first half clock, Travis Cooper caught a 12-yard scoring pass from Cunningham to make the score 49-14 at intermission.

The pay station continued to be open for Manvel as they outscored Travis 14-9 in the third.

Travis picked up their points on a safety and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Cunningham to Steven Sims.

The Mavs got scores from Deontay Anderson on a 47-yard pass interception and a touchdown pass from Kyle Trask to Hunter Hagdorn covering 40-yards.

Manvel put the final nail in the coffin with two more scores in the final stanza as Brandon Bell scored on a 14-yard punt return and on a 23-yard run by McCarty. Montano added his 10th PAT of the game.
