Manvel High School holds writing competition

Freshman Perla Hernandez, sophomore Amber Mahy, junior Anna Rader and senior Lexus Jacobs were selected as the winners of a recent Manvel High Writing Contest.

During the month of November, students at Manvel High School had an opportunity to enter any type of writing for a school wide writing competition, hosted by the English Department. Each English teacher advertised the contest in classrooms.

20 students entered the competition, and the English teachers hope to hold another contest next semester with even more student involvement.

“We hoped this would give our students, who are required to write every day in class, an authentic reason to write from their hearts with voice,” English Department Head Barbara Wells said. “It was a joy reading the submissions, and the competition in the 10th grade was especially fierce. The winner of that grade was terrifying – it made me cringe and pull away from it several times,” Wells said.

Winners received a $10 Sonic gift card and 5 free dress days, approved by an assistant principal.

“I was very happy to win the contest in my grade because I want to be a writer, and I love when people compliment my work,” senior Lexus Jacobs said.
