A public hearing requested by New Hope Church will be held during the first meeting of the year Friendswood City Council.
The Monday, Jan. 5, regular meeting includes the 7 p.m. joint public hearing between the council and Planning and Zoning Commission regarding a zone change request from New Hope Community Church, 108 W. Edgewood.
The request would change the site from Community Shopping Center to Community Shopping Center-Specific Use Permit, or SUP, for religious organizations.
The church’s East Campus had been located in a built-out leased space of a former grocery store, but it recently purchased the entire building. According to the church website, about 1,000 people attend services each weekend at the East Campus, and plans are being drawn to expand use of that location.
Monday’s meeting will be held at Friendswood City Hall, 910 South Friendswood Drive.
City Council normally meets on the first Monday of the month beginning at 4:30 p.m. Anyone may attend meetings, and at least one public comment period is provided for citizen input. Agendas for the council are posted online at www.ci.friendswood.tx.us.
Friendswood will head into 2015 with a higher financial rating from Stardard & Poor’s, which this month raised the city by two notches, from “AA Minus” to “AA Plus.”
This change, according to staff, reflects S&P’s confidence that the city’s financial position and the local economy are stable. The “AA Plus” rating is one step below “AAA” – which is S&P’s highest score.
Friendswood leaders in November refinanced outstanding bonds, resulting in an estimated $1.17 million in savings in the future. The refinancing process is similar to a homeowner refinancing his mortgage at a lower interest rate.
