Sunday (January 4th) was a special day for Lt. Samuel “Jack ” Helton who was promoted to Battalion Chief during a pinning ceremony.
Firefighters , family members, friends, city officials including City Council Members Keith Ordeneaux and Tony Carbone attended the event at Pearland Fire Station number 4.
Fire Chief Vance Riley spoke favorably of Lt. Helton before his daughter, Kamree and son, Austin gleefully pinned badges on their dad while onlookers snapped pictures.
Jack began his career as a firefighter in 2002 spending the past four years serving in Pearland as a Lieutenant for Station 5 and is the Assistant Fire Chief for the League City Volunteer Fire Department. Lt. Helton enjoys training new firefighters and has been nominated to serve as a statewide officer trainer for a program sponsored by the Texas Fire Chiefs Association. He was recently recognized by the Pearland Rotary Club and awarded the prestigious “Service Above Self” award for outstanding service to the Pearland community.
When Helton was asked to talk about himself and the type of leader he plans to be, the new Chief paused for a moment. Then he came back with his life motto.
“I want to be inspiring, encouraging and have the ability to motivate others,” he said.
“I am fortunate to work with the most skilled firefighters and I enjoy training firefighters to be the best they can be and my success comes from them being successful and safe.”
After the ceremony, family members, friends and co-workers congratulated the newly promoted Chief over ice cream and coffee.
Pinning ceremonies like this one are long-time traditions here in Pearland and around the country.
