FISD campuses, departments ‘adopt’ a Board member

January is School Board Recognition month in Friendswood ISD. The district will honor the seven elected officials Jan. 12 at the regularly scheduled meeting of the board.

To highlight the celebration, the seven trustees will be “adopted” by a campus in the district, the Special Education Department and the Technology Department. Each year the location rotates for each member.

School board members will be seen at various locations throughout the month as they visit their adopted locations. The campus invites the members to all events of interest to showcase what students are accomplishing.

A small token of appreciation were given to board members by the principals and executive directors at Monday’s meeting.

The state theme for School Board Appreciation month is A Work of Heart. The Texas Association of School Boards promotes the theme each year to build awareness and support.

“School board members are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children,” TASB representative Barbara Williams said.

Current Friendswood ISD Board members include President Rebecca Hillenburg, former junior high principal and teacher in FISD; Vice President Dr. Matt Robinson, urologist; Secretary Dr. David Montz, D.D.S., and members Tony Hopkins, Executive Director for JP Morgan Global Commodities; Robert McCabe, attorney and partner in the firm of Oldenettel and McCabe in Houston; the Rev. Ralph Hobratschk, senior pastor of Hope Lutheran Church; and Michael Shaw, engineer at The Boeing Company in its Space Exploration Strategic Planning and Business Development organization.

McCabe is being adopted by Westwood-Bales while Shaw is being adopted by Cline Elementary. Montz has Windsong, Hobratschk has the junior high and Tony Hopkins has Friendswood High School. Robinson has been adopted by the Special Education Department and Hillenburg will be touring with the Technology Department.

“Friendswood ISD is appreciative of their service, focusing on the best interests of children in the district. They make critical choices and are advocates for public education. Their vision and leadership skills help Friendswood ISD be the premier district that it is,” Superintendent Trish Hanks said.

They devote much time each year to conferences, workshops and courses that offer further insight into the varied roles of a successful board.

FISD Board of Trustees meets regularly the second Monday of each month beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the Administration Building boardroom at 302 Laurel. It is an open meeting.

“Our board is a team that is composed of local citizens who are dedicated to their efforts. They work tireless hours without pay and it truly is a ‘work of heart,’ from each one,” Hanks said. “We appreciate their work in January and every other month in the year. We thank them for their year-round commitment to Friendswood ISD.”
