Candidate filing for the May 9 city election begins on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
Up for election are city council Position No. 2, currently held by Scott Sherman, and Position No. 4, now held by Keith Ordeneaux.
Those filing for election must be a resident of the city for at least 6 months and a qualified Texas voter.
To file, candidates should complete and have notarized an application and submit it to the City Secretary by the deadline: Friday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. Applications include a space for the candidate to list which position he or she seeks, address and length of residency within the city.
According to city documents, the first thing a candidate should do is appoint a campaign treasurer and file the required Texas Ethics Commissioner Campaign Treasurer Appointment Form, also with the City Secretary’s Office.
Since there are no geographic “districts,” within Pearland, all council members are elected at-large. The mayor and council members are elected for three-year terms, and council members are limited to two consecutive terms.
Unless otherwise rescheduled, the City Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Meeting agendas are posted to the city web site at least 72 hours in advance of meetings.
April 9 is the last day to register to vote in the May 9 election. Early voting will begin on April 7 and end May 5.
