Lighthouse backers fill sold-out gala

Country music legend Tracy Byrd performed for a sold-out crowd at the Lighthouse Charity Team’s annual gala Saturday.

For more than 30 years, the gala has brought in the lion’s share of the budget for the Friendswood-based nonprofit, which has grown to serve thousands of meals per year.

If all is collected, over $300,000 will have been raised towards the team’s annual budget of $500,000. “It made a major dent in our annual budget,” said Lighthouse operations coordinator Scott Gordon. “We try to raise the majority of it in one night – I’d say we probably hit about 75 percent.”

The last table available was purchased about three days ahead of the event, he said, with 511 guests, plus an additional 100+ including Team Members, 147th National Guard, models, etc., filling Pearland’s KC Hall to capacity.

“It was a great concert by one of the best,” he said, “an all around good time – all to help us keep doing what we do.”

None of it would be possible, he added, without both longtime supporters who have backed the team since the early years as well as new donors.

Major auction buyers at the event included the Dean Corbin family of CVA, Alvin Cormier with Critical Path Resources, Patrick O’Day of O’Day Drilling, JMH Sandblasting and Coating, among others. “And of course McRee Ford, Del Papa (Distributing Co.) and all our regular donors,” he said.

Now with an updated website, the Lighthouse Charity Team will be busy with local benefits and festivals, though volunteers have also traveled hundreds of miles to assist in efforts such as disaster relief. Groups served by Lighthouse incur only the costs of the food and products used during each event, allowing them to receive the benefit of 100 percent of proceeds. There is never a charge for volunteer labor or equipment.

Last year, the group held a fall golf tournament fundraiser that may be repeated this year. “We’ll know more about that in April,” Gordon said.

The team was founded in founded in 1984 by Dick and Horacene Daugird. Country music stars such as Tracy Lawrence, Mark Chestnut and Kevin Fowler have performed at its annual gala events.

Donations are welcome at any time to ensure that the charity will have adequate funds to continue it’s mission of “People Helping People!”
