FFA members at Friendswood High School recently attended and participated in two major stock shows and rodeos in Texas. The group competed at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo as well as the San Antonio Stock Show.
“The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is one of the biggest shows in the country,” Ag Science teacher/FFA Sponsor Laura Vail said. “They have lots of different things that FFA kids can participate in.”
This year Friendswood FFA participated in the Junior Breeding Beef Show, the Junior Wether Goat Show, the Calf Scramble and the Meat Judging Contest.
The Friendswood FFA Cattle Show team went to Fort Worth Stock Show January 22-25. They exhibited their breeding heifer project in the Junior Livestock Show.
Six students competed in the Junior Breeding Beef category. Blair Allen placed first, Dakota Kempken and Ashlyn Heiber both in second place, Shelby Smith third place, Dianna Dawson in fourth place and Bailey Beken in sixth place.
Other students who participated in the Junior Breeding Beef Show included Kameron Noack, Jordan Gates, Olivia Stran, Cortni Cox and Rachel Pate.
Hannah Saville took her Wether goat to the Fort Worth Stock show on January 29 through February 1, to show it in the Junior Market Goat Show. Hannah Saville made the first cut in the Junior Market Goat Show.
At the Fort Worth Rodeo, Friendswood FFA had two students compete in the calf scramble. Dustin Surber and Olivia Cates scrambled.
“Both worked really hard to catch a calf and Dustin ended up catching one!” Vail said.
The Friendswood FFA Senior and Junior Teams competed in the Meat Judging Competition at Fort Worth. The Senior Team included the following: Blair Allen, Bailey Beken, Jordan Gates, and Hannah Saville.
The Junior Team included John Aldridge, Jack Cowan, Ty Kempken, and Dustin Surber.
San Antonio Stock Show had a brand new facility this year and Friendswood FFA took nine breeding beef heifers, and one market Wether goat to the show. The heifers were there February 17-20 and were shown in the Breeding Beef Show.
Seven FHS members placed. These included the following: Dakota Kempken and Dianna Dawson both placed second, Ashlyn Heiber third, Ty Kempken fourth, Blair Allen seventh, Rachel Pate ninth and Bailey Beken in tenth place.
Also participating in the Junior Breeding Beef show were Kameron Noack and Cortni Cox.
Hannah Saville took a Wether goat to the San Antonio Livestock Show to show him in the Market Goat Show. Dustin Surber also calf scrambled at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. He ended up catching a calf there.
Upcoming shows include the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo.
The schedule for Houston include March 11 – Market Poultry, March 12-15 – Heifer, March 11-12 – Market Goats, March 14-19 – Market Swine, and March 16-20 – Market Steers.
The Galveston County Fair and Rodeo is set for April 10-18.
The Friendswood FFA members hosted an open house Feb. 25 to showcase its members and their animals at the Ag Facility (barn) on Baker Road in Friendswood.
