MHS competes, advances in competitions

Manvel High’s musicians, athletes and dancers are advancing in competition to represent their school this Spring.

In band, MHS boasts two All-State percussionists: junior Josh Berry and freshman Josh Villanueva. The Manvel Percussion Concert will be held this Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in MHS Auditorium.

Six girls qualified for the Region IV Texas Powerlifting Championship held at Beaumont Westbrook High on Feb. 26. They were: Yessi Altimirano, Triston Shelton, Miranda Gammage, Jessica Echegoyen, Krystal Gonzalez. Altimirano took first place, making her the regional champion in her weight class. Jessica Echegoyen took second, making her the regional runner-up in her weight class. Both girls will compete at the Texas State Championship Powerlifting Meet in Corpus Christi on March 20.

The Manvel High Majestics competed in the 2015 division competition, earning 3rd place overall officers in classic division. Other awards are: 1st place Team Pom, 1st place Team Modern, 1st place Team Lyrical, 3rd place Team Jazz, 2nd place team in classic division. Outstanding Choreography Awards – Team Jazz, Modern, Pom, and Lyrical Division I soloist – Essence Felder, Makayla Leblanc, Jade Turner, Sierra Jackson, Carmell Phipps, Cecillene Geraldo, and Catelyn Huffman.

The following Dance 1 students received a Division I rating at the dance state assessment: Cana Scott, Ashley Thomas, Vanessa Sayroo, Reshma Shajan, Quaviaunce Parish, Raelyn Galllien, Raven Gallien, Kayla Newsome, Gala Geiger, Lauren Turner, Faith Warren and Thelma Garcia.
