PHS Academic Decathlon team headed to national competition

The Pearland High School Academic Decathlon has snagged its fourth state championship to advance to the national competition April 16-18 in California.

With 28 individual medals and a score of 50,294 points, PHS students ranked as Team Gold at the state meet in late February.

State individual medalists include:

Honors Division

Ethan Arnold: Gold in music and science; silver in art and economics; bronze in language/literature, math and social science; and overall silver medalist in honors division
SaraBeth Matthews: Silver in language/literature and bronze in science

Scholastic Division
Micah Gautney: Silver in science and bronze in social science
Samuel Holmes: Silver in language/literature, music and art
Garret Mattila: Gold in speech, silver in language/literature and bronze in music, science and social science

Varsity Division
Savannah Segura: Gold in interview
Zachary Watson: Gold in language/literature, art and economics; silver in social science; bronze in music and science; and overall silver medalist in varsity division

Other teammates included Jimmy Thai and Dakota Dock.

Academic Decathlon engages high school students from all academic levels in rigorous team competition.

During meets, students compete individually in multiple-choice tests in science, math, economics, language/literature, art and music. Competitors also take a written quiz and complete speech, interview and essay contests.

Team coaches are Robert Layne, Corey Cogswell and Scott Crossno.
