Relay for Life set for April 11

A full schedule of activities and entertainment are planned for Saturday, April 11 at Alvin ISD Memorial Stadium for the 11th annual Alvin Manvel Area Relay For Life. Note the location is back at the football stadium at Alvin High School.

Opening ceremonies start at 11 a.m. with Mike Mayhugh, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Alvin offering a prayer for the 12 hour event. Survivors and caregivers are invited to enjoy a special breakfast brunch at 10:15 a.m. provided by Kroger and Dannay’s in Alvin and Brisas in Manvel. Survivors and caregivers are asked to park on the visitor side of the stadium on on Stadium Dr. for easy access on to the field and the breakfast area.

The rest of the day is filled with entertainment by Erica Honore, school bands, Tim Salter, Men of Praise from Sagemont Church, gospel music by Tahwanna Reed and lots of fun activities, including Mr. Relay, theme laps, and more. Little Joe’s Mobile DJ Service will be on hand to emcee.

“We have 25 teams participating this year and they will be selling everything from hot dogs to fruit cups. We also have vendors who will be selling non-food items,” said Debra McDonald, chair of 2015 Relay.

The very moving and solemn luminaria service will start around 8:30p.m. with Alvin Community College Regent Bel Sanchez reading the names. Following the luminaria service, more entertainment will follow until the closing ceremony at 10:30 p.m.

“We’re trying something a little different this year,” said McDonald. “We are going from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., so we hope folks will stay the entire time and enjoy the entertainment, activities and walking the track.
