Eight Friendswood High School science students successfully participated in the Exxon-Mobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair March 26-29 in San Antonio. Participants included Joshua Gruener, Karan Jerath, Aditya Mohile, Neha Narayan, Sarah Palmer, Shanika Silva, Kevin Westerfeld and Mackinnon Westerfeld.
Aditya Mohile received the Second Place Overall Grand award in the Physical Science category with his Computer Science project, “Computer Aided Diagnosis of Oral Cancer.”
Karan Jerath received first place for his Environmental Management project, “International Oil Spill Remediation: The Numerical Simulation of an In-Situ Subsea Separator Part II.” Jerath also received a Future Engineer Award from the State Board of Professional Engineers.
Aditya Mohile and Karan Jerath were selected to participate in the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA from May 10 -15.
“The brightest students from over 70 countries will compete at the fair,” FHS science teacher Rebecca Clark said.
Joshua Gruener received second place for his Earth & Planetary Sciences project, “Impact Craters: What’s Your Angle?”
Gruener, Mohile and Jerath will be invited to participate in the Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy to be held this summer for a week at Texas A&M University.
Shanika Silva received third place for her Mathematical Science project, “Where Should I Put My Eggs? Mathematical Model to Predict Market Correlation Based on Differences in Macroeconomic Variables.”
Mackinnon Westerfeld won an award from the Texas Tech College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources with his Plant Science project, “Green Roof Revolution.”
Students from the 12 Texas regional science fairs competed at the fair. Sponsors of the fair were the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Texas Workforce Commission and Exxon-Mobil.
FHS teachers Rebecca Clark and Arden Zimmerman were chaperones for the event.
Seventh Grader Blake Propst was also a participant in the science fair in San Antonio. His teacher is Jenny Dixon.
