The Manvel boys track team was considered one of the favorites to capture the 2015 Class 6A state track championship. When they found out that their 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams were called up to qualify for the state meet, then Manvel head coach Kendrick Crumedy knew he had the fire power to challenge for Manvel’s first-ever state track championship.

The 2013-2014 Manvel girls basketball team upset defending state champion Duncanville for the girls state basketball title for the school’s first championship in any sport. Now the Mavericks can add another state championship trophy in the trophy case in boys track.

Manvel scored 55 points to finish ahead of second-place Port Arthur who scored 44 points. New Braunfels Canyon placed third with 40 points followed by Kingwood (34), and Arlington Martin (32) to round out the top five teams.
Deontay Anderson won state in the 200 meters with a time of 20.99.

Howard Fields III placed sixth in the 400 meters in 47.34.

The 1600 meter relay quartet of D’Vaughn Pennamon, Reggie Hemphill, Joshua Martin, and Howard Fields placed second for the silver medal in 3:12.48.

The 800-meter foursome of Reggie Hemphill, Christion Childs, D’Vaughn Pennmon, and Deontay Anderson, and placed second (1.24.50) at state for big points to the team total.

The 400-meter relay team of D’Eriq King, Jaren Colbert, Deontay Anderson, and D’Vaughn Pennamon also stepped up to place third with a time of 40.61.

The most encouraging fact about this state track championship is that Manvel doesn’t have a senior on the team so they will all be back to defend their state championship in 2016.
