The Dawson Navy JROTC is a very active participant in the Keep Pearland Beautiful Adopt-A-Spot Program. Picking up litter makes Pearland a cleaner and more beautiful place.

KPB Adopt-A-Spot program a success

In News by Reporter News

Keep Pearland Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Spot Program is only successful because of the great people who participate.

At the recent Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) Environmental Awards Dinner on May 9, KPB recognized several of these groups. The highest KPB litter award, “The Clean Up Award,” was presented to New Life Church for their long service to the city of Pearland. New Life Church (formerly St. Stephens Lutheran Church) has faithfully kept an Adopt-A-Spot since 1991.

KPB invited all the current Adopt-A-Spot holders to the annual dinner. The following families responded to the invitation, attended the dinner and were recognized for their loyalty to the program: the Austin, Tollefson, Wiltz, and Miller families. The Galan Family was not able to attend at the last minute and was not present to get their certificate.

The Schaffner Family received a certificate for being the newest family to Adopt-A-Spot. Jim Wright was not present to receive his award for Best Solo Effort. The JROTC of Pearland High School will receive a certificate for being the consistently the largest group.

Your family, group or organization can also “adopt” a section of our community (a park, public school campus or 1 mile stretch of road). Each adoption involves a commitment to pick up litter along a one-mile stretch of Pearland street at least 2 times annually and fill out an online wrap up report.

Keep Pearland initiated the Adopt-A-Spot program shortly after the Texas Department of Transportation began its “Don’t Mess With Texas” and Adopt-A-Highway program in the 1980s. Each of our adopters follows a program modeled after the Adopt-A-Highway program.

Adopting a section of Pearland is simple. The first step is to check the website and see which places are currently up for adoption (http://keeppearlandbeautiful.org/recycling-waste/adopt-a-spot/).

Download both the application and agreement from the web page, read them both fully, fill them out and sign. There are several options for getting the forms to KPB: You can fax them to the office (281-652-1682), scan and email to [email protected] or mail it to Keep Pearland (3519 Liberty Dr, Pearland, TX 77581).

After KPB receives your application they will notify you and let you know if that street is still available and you will be ready for your first clean up. The Adopter can pick up supplies for their litter clean up at the KPB office and let the staff know that they are doing their clean up.

After the clean up fill out the online wrap up report (http://keeppearla-ndbeautiful.org/recycling-waste/adopt-a-spot/adopt-a-spot-wrap-up-report/) and KPB staff will order your Adopt-A-Spot sign.

Litter is a community wide problem. Keep Pearland Beautiful appreciates all of our Adopt-A-Spot groups, but especially the families that take time out of their busy schedules to help us make Pearland the cleanest and most beautiful city in Texas.
