New principal makes Westwood distinct

In a special meeting Monday night, the Friendswood ISD school board named Kristin Moffitt as principal of Westwood Elementary, newly separated from Bales in a move by the board last week.

A longtime employee of FISD, Moffitt taught 10 years at Westwood while earning her Masters in educational management from the University of Houston, and has served as 6th grade assistant principal at Friendswood Junior High.

The Westwood principal position was posted internally in FISD, and the superintendent, deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent met with the lone finalist for the position last week.

The board agreed earlier this month to separate the two adjacent campuses into two distinct ones with their own administrations and principals. They were combined in 2011 as a cost-cutting measure after severe budget cuts by the state, and sixth grade was moved to the junior high level.

Since then, only one principal supervised both campuses and the approximately 1,000 pre-K through fifth-graders.

To help even out the enrollment at each school, FISD is planning to move third grade to the Bales campus.

Regular meeting dates of FISD Trustees are scheduled for July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14.

Trustees meet in the district’s Administration Building, 302 Laurel Dr. A time for public comments is scheduled for each meeting. Agendas are posted at at least 72 hours in advance of meetings.
