7th Annual Pocket Pear Tournament a success

In News by Reporter News

Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) hosted the 7th Annual Pocket Pear Poker Hold ’Em Tournament and Casino Night on June 27, raising $9,300 for the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship fund.

The evening started with dinner, photo booth fun and music provided by DJ Charles Smith. After dinner, the poker players got their game faces on, while the casino players turned on huge smiles as “Black Jack!” and cheers filled the room. As players in the poker tournament were knocked out, the DJ turned up the speakers for dancing. Down to the final table at the tournament, John Cornwell, a Lakes of Highland Glen poker player went all-in winning the tournament. The last activity for the night was the raffle. Prizes included a handmade picnic bench and poker table, 43” Smart TV, L’Auberge hotel package, and several sports themed baskets.

KPB would like to thank the event sponsors including A-Better Plumbing, A&A Cleaning Services, ADDI Printing, Allen Boone Humphries Robinson LLP, Boedecker Construction, Del Papa Distributing, Dionisio Winery, HEB, The Joe Miller Family, Lion’s Club of Pearland, Memorial Hermann, and Pat Tagtow. KPB also greatly appreciates the raffle prize donors, our volunteers for the many hours of work to make it a great evening, and the Pearland community for their support.

KPB hosts the Pocket Pear each year in honor of the late Joe Miller, an avid environmentalist who volunteered his time to Keep Pearland Beautiful as well as several other community organizations. Scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors in Pearland who demonstrate good stewardship of the environment and are pursuing higher education. In 7 years, a total of $35,000 in scholarships has been awarded. This year, a total of $8000 was awarded to five high school graduates from Pearland.
