Amenities, streetscaping to be added in city

The City of Friendswood will install $150,000 in lights, 8-foot sidewalk paving and benches at City Hall, Fire Station No. 1 and Stevenson Park.

The new amenities will match those required by downtown property owners. The enhanced streetscape was a recommendation from the Friendswood Community and Economic Development Committee that presented a report in June to council. The committee researched and recommended ways the city could entice new commercial business.

The city currently requires downtown property owners to add amenities such as lights, benches and a tree every 25 feet. Another option not chosen by the council would have included tree-planting requirement, but councilmen and staff agreed there is no shortage of trees in the areas addressed.

Councilman Jim Scott cast the lone opposing vote on the measure.
