FISD improving class ratios

In News by Reporter News

The number of classrooms exceeding state requirements for student-teacher ratios has decreased in Friendswood ISD.

The school board on Monday agreed to submit a waiver request for nine classrooms for the current year. Last year, the district required waivers for 16 classrooms.

All Texas school districts must conduct an enrollment survey by September, and those classes that are over the allowable teacher-student ratio of 22 to 1 must submit a waiver request. They also must present a plan and timeline to bring class sizes into compliance.

The district has monitored enrollment trends to predict future needs, and has hired teachers accordingly, FISD documents state.

Among classrooms exceeding the ratio this year were two classes at Westwood Elementary, five classes at Bales, one class at Cline and one at Windsong.

During the meeting, trustees approved the hiring of Jamie Honeycut as theater arts teacher at Friendswood Junior High and Sarah Mahler as third-grade teacher at Cline Elementary.

Also on Monday, the board agreed to request a waiver from the state for two early release days at the elementary/intermediate level and four early release days at the secondary level for the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years.

The board honored 14 employees of the district with its “Making A Difference Award” on Monday. Recognized for going “above and beyond, contributing at the highest level” are Cyndi Slaton and Karen Blackwood of Bales, Brooke Holtvluwer and Kathy Ramsey of Cline, Al Taglialavore and Gail Michalek of Friendswood High, Anastasia Mendivil and Sharon Depalma of FHS Food Services, Tracy Webb and Eddie Powell of Friendswood Junior High, Paula Owens and Krissy Strickhausen of Westwood and Kim Scott and Janet Gloger of Windsong.

The school board meets at the FISD Administration Building, 302 Laurel, on the second Monday of each month. Future meeting dates are Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 14 and Jan. 11.

Agendas are posted at least 72 hours before each meeting online at www.boarddocs.com.
