Future Shadow Creek High announces mascot

The new high school coming to Shadow Creek in west Pearland will be known as the Sharks, Alvin ISD officials announced this week.

The colors and mascot for the future high school were unveiled at the AISD Sept. 8 board meeting. Trustees approved the mascot as well as a color scheme of black and silver with an ocean blue accent.

Future students could vote on the mascot via an election held at the Westside Library using actual voting machines made available through a partnership with the Brazoria County Elections Office, Commissioner Stacy Adams and the school district. Choices for the mascot also included the Jaguars, Spartans, Storm, Timberwolves and Titans.

The campus is slated to open in the fall of 2016-17 school year.

“Throughout the Shadow Creek High School mascot naming process, which included multiple community input meetings, a community survey and a student committee, it was evident that elementary age students and high school students evaluate mascots in vastly different ways,” said Kelly Hestand, Shadow Creek High School principal.

Ninth-graders at Manvel High who live in the Shadow Creek High School attendance zone will be some of the first students to walk the halls of Shadow Creek High School when it opens next year.

Also during the AISD meeting, Trustees approved a new school calendar which goes into effect now.

The most notable change on the calendar was the conclusion of the school year, which went from June 1 to May 27.

The update was due to a change in requirements from 180 days of instruction to 75,600 minutes of instruction as defined by House Bill 2610. This law allows school districts more flexibility to create a calendar that meets local needs.

Other changes are full instructional days Oct. 21 and Feb. 10, which had previously been scheduled as early release days. Late arrival days for high school students on Sept. 16, Oct. 7, Nov. 11, Jan. 27, March 2 and April 6 were also eliminated, adding six full instructional days for students.

High school graduation dates were also changed as follows: Alvin High and ASSETS Academy students will graduate on May 28, while Manvel High students will now graduate on May 27.
