Timeline set for sports park

The annual fall Spookfest Softball Tournament will have to wait until next fall, but work is under way on a much anticipated expansion and renovation to Friendswood’s Sports Park.

The updated complex is set to re-open this spring with four new youth softball fields, new concession and restroom facility, new field lighting and expanded parking. The park is located near the intersection of FM 528 and Moore Road.

A detailed construction timeline recently developed by staff was presented to City Council Monday during a capital projects update.

According to the timeline, concession and restroom facilities are to be installed in October, fence work will begin in December and final touch-up or “punch list” items will be done in February of 2016.

The park is home to the Friendswood Girls Softball Association as well as adult leagues. With the expansion, the Parks and Recreation Department hopes to host more softball league nights and potentially a kickball league.

Work also is proceeding at the park to be known as Lake Friendswood, though not as quickly as planned. Design plans, expected to be ready in August, are pending. According to city documents, staff is working with a consultant to determine the location of a planned pavilion. Once a design is ready, it will be presented to the Parks Board and neighboring residents for input. Located off Windemere Road and FM 518, the 40-acre lake remains closed to the public. Plans include a walking trail, parking lot, restrooms and floating pier.

Park improvements are among projects being funded through a bond package approved by voters in 2013.
