Long time Municipal Court Clerk Annie Torres accepted a commendation from Manvel City Council this week. Mayor Delores Martin proclaimed the week of November 2 through the 6 as Municipal Court Week.
The proclamation serves to bring attention and offer appreciation to those who make the municipal court system work for “the vital services they perform and their exemplary dedication to our community.”
Municipal courts have a great influence over how the public perceives the justice system as a whole since the most common types of cases settled in the courts include traffic and ordinance violations, small claims cases, domestic cases, misdemeanor offenses, and preliminary proceedings in felony cases.
Considered a “citizens court,” municipal courts can provide jury trials but often the cases are adjudicated by the judge. The municipal judge is appointed by city council and the court is funded with local tax dollars.
