Enhanced, “Next Generation” technology is now at the fingertips of public servants who answer 9-1-1 calls in Friendswood.
Following an early Tuesday morning (Nov. 17) transition which was invisible to public, the Friendswood Police Department was upgraded to the “Next Generation” 9-1-1 system. They are the first department in the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 area to switch to the advanced system.
“Next Generation” is a benefit to the public by providing Friendswood Police added 9-1-1 system redundancy and the ability to communicate more information (voice and data) much quicker to a larger number of call centers in the region.
“Although the foundation of public safety in Friendswood will always be embedded in many people, including those who answer 9-1-1 calls and those who respond to calls for service, much of today’s policing effort is accelerated through advanced technology,” said Police Chief Robert Wieners. “This new, additional component of the 9-1-1 system enables us to have a more robust and multi-functional tool which plays a role in community safety.”
The upgraded system brought online in Friendswood was funded by the Greater Harris County 9-1-1, which administers the 9-1-1 infrastructure for over 40 call centers in the area.
