Pearland’s growing Lower Kirby District has landed a new biotech facility to be located on an 11-acre site, Pearland Economic Development Corp. announced.
Designed to capture a significant portion of office and commercial projects, the 1,200-acre Kirby district on the city’s western border will now be home to office space, development and laboratories for the global company Lonza. The company has about 40 research and development facilities worldwide.
Other companies locating in the district include Cardiovascular Systems, Inc., Merit Medical Systems, Base Pair Biotechnologies and Kelsey-Seybold.
“It has been a long-standing goal of the city to cultivate a broad spectrum of medical and life science related organizations in our community,” Mayor Tom Reid stated. “Lonza’s interest in Pearland is a testament to our efforts and willingness to work with businesses interested in investing in our city.”
The PEDC and city officials began working with Lonza in late 2014 on the project, which is intended to be completed by the third quarter of 2017. The facility will be located on Kirby Drive and will initially employ about 50.
Lonza officials cited the city’s “proximity to the Texas Medical Center and the continued growth” as appealing factors.
