While students and faculty are on summer vacation, Friendswood ISD board members and administrators are preparing for a busy fall at their July 18 meeting of the School Board at the FISD Administration building.
A public hearing on the 2016-2017 budget was held at 7 p.m. After the board meeting resumed, the Board passed the budget for the new school year. The total for 2016-2017 was approved at $47,950,000.
Comparing the approved budget with last year’s budget, the following was reported: maintenance and operations increase of 2.68 percent, debt service decrease of 14.91 percent and total expenditures increase by .05 percent.
The Board also approved a first amended order calling for tax ratification election to be held by FISD on Sept. 10, making provisions for the election and resolving voting related matters. The amended sections concerned dates and hours for early voting along with clarifying that no early voting will take place on Labor Day, Sept. 5.
A TRE is a special election to approve an increase in a district’s Maintenance and Operations (M&O) tax rate above $1.04. The school board has the authority to levy an M&O tax rate up to $1.04 but any increase above that amount requires voter approval. On June 13, the Board adopted an M&O tax rate of $1.13, an increase of 9 cents, and lowered the I&S rate by 7 cents for an overall tax rate increase of 2 cents. Since the M&O amount is greater than $1.04 voter approval is required.
A Trustee Election was called by the Board for Tuesday Nov. 8, for the purpose of electing four trustees to fill a four-year term of office for positions 1, 2, 3, and 4. Filing begins Saturday, July 23, (first business day available for applications is Monday, July 25) and ends Aug. 22, at 5 p.m.
The Board approved the continuance of charging for reserved parking at Henry Winston Stadium for the 2016-2017 football season. The amount of $53 will continue to be charged for all home games in the fall Varsity football season.
There are approximately 300 parking spaces available in the parking lot adjacent to the home stands. The revenue from the parking fees will be used to help cover the high cost of security needed for home football games.
The contract for a joint election with Galveston County Nov. 8, involving FISD’s Board of Trustee election was approved.
A special board meeting was scheduled for Monday, Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. to amend the 2015-2016 budget. The fiscal year closes Aug. 31, and the Board members will meet to amend the 2015-2016 budget to be in compliance with state law which states that no expenditures can exceed the adopted amount.
The next regular meeting of the FISD School Board will be Aug. 8.
