On Thursday, July 21, Officers from the Pearland Police Department and a Fire Inspector from the Pearland Fire Department’s Fire Marshal Office participated in the annual Tip a Cop event sponsored by the Special Olympics of Texas (SOTX). The event took place at the Pearland Texas Roadhouse restaurant located at 2526 Smith Ranch Road. In addition to the officers, 2 local athletes from the Special Olympics were on hand to greet guests of the restaurant. Nine volunteer officers took part in activities from pictures with children and the athletes, to opening doors for guests, serving water and tea and even dancing on the floor with wait staff from the restaurant. For some of the officers it was their first time volunteering for the event, others have participated with fundraising for SOTX in the past.
Captain Chad Randall who organized the volunteers said, “This year we threw out a challenge. Our team last year was made up of officers from several agencies, this year we wanted an all Pearland team to serve our community at this meaningful event. We had no problem finding officers who were willing to participate in the fundraising to raise money for the athletes of the Special Olympics. The event was a great success with donations exceeding $3,200. There is a close relationship between the Special Olympics and Law Enforcement and Pearland’s officers were happy to get a chance to help.” In addition to the Tip a Cop event, Pearland Officers have participated as escorts for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Anyone interested in helping in the future can visit the Special Olympics website at SOTX.org.
