Jennie C. Wheeler, 94, passed away August 18, 2016 in Friendswood, Texas. She was born June 24, 1922 to Michael and Mary Curtis of Gloucester, New Jersey.
Jennie attended school in Gloucester and worked in the family candy store after school. Upon graduation from Gloucester High School she went to work for Jersey Bell Telephone. Soon the War broke out and Jennie worked as an overseas cable operator handling communication from the European War Theater. She received several commendations from the U.S. War Department for her contribution to the war effort.
After the war she met Bobby Wheeler and they were married in Camden, New Jersey in 1948. Jennie soon became a Texan, moving to Texas in 1949 to raise her family. She continued working for the Bell System joining Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Her career blossomed and she worked for another 30 years in Bell System Security. She retired after 43 years.
Jennie was a breast cancer survivor for more than 34 years. In her retirement years, she and Bobby enjoyed traveling and went to all the corners of the world: China, Europe, Normandy, New Zealand, and Australia. After Bobby’s passing in 1992, she continued to travel with the church and her family, frequenting Disney World to ride Splash Mountain.
The last four years Jennie lived at Evening Star Personal Care Home in Alvin, Texas where she was an integral part of the character of the home. Jennie will be missed by the staff and her friends there.
Jennie is survived by her son Billy and wife Cindy; grandson Andrew and wife Staci; granddaughters, Robin and husband Rob Murphey, and Stacey. Great grandchildren include Paul and Jesse, sons of Rob and Robin and Alice, daughter of Andrew and Staci.
A funeral mass was held on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft St., Houston, Texas 77096, with Fr. Hai Dang officiating.
