Early voting began Monday for the Nov. 8 election that has several local decisions.
Hours for early voting are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through this Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. On Halloween, early voting hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Pearland early voting locations are the Tom Reid Library, 3522 Liberty Dr.; Westside Event Center, 2150 Countryplace Parkway; and the Westside Library, 2803 Business Center Dr. Manvel voters may go to the North Annex, 7313 Corporate Dr. at Highway 6.
Among local issues to be decided are a local option election on alcohol sales as well as a $220 million bond referendum for the Pearland ISD.
Pearland school district officials called the bond election in August after recommendations of a long-range planning advisory committee. The district last held a bond election in 2006. The bonds would fund renovations at six aging PISD campuses as well as additions, technology upgrades and security features such as fencing, entrances and cameras. It does not call for additional campuses.
“If we do this work, we estimate that additional schools will not be needed for at least another 8 to 10 years,” PISD Superintendent John Kelly said, adding that the district needs to add capacity at existing campuses to keep up with growth.
Preparing for the outcome of the local option election, Pearland City Council on Monday finalized an ordinance adding a provision for liquor and package stores, cigar, tobacco and vaping lounges to its unified development code.
Changes would restrict alcohol and tobacco lounge uses to conditional use permits throughout the city. The conditional use permit, or “CUP” process will provide an opportunity for the city council and Planning and Zoning Commission to evaluate each site and determine the appropriateness of the use.
On election day, county residents can go to any “vote center” throughout the county to cast a ballot.
In Brazoria County, the Nov. 8 election will include the local positions of sheriff, tax assessor-collector, treasurer, commissioners for precincts 1 and 3, four justice of the peace seats and four constable positions.
