When a team that has no chance of making the playoffs, they have nothing to lose in the end. That team is usually dangerous as they would like nothing better than to get an upset win.
Pearland was facing such a team when they traveled to Hopper Stadium in Clute to take on cellar-dwelling Brazoswood who hasn’t won a district game all season.
The Oilers were facing a team that was looking at this game as their playoff game while hoping to knock off a team predicted to win by a comfortable margin.
In previous meetings with the Bucs, Pearland has found that Brazoswood (3-6, 0-5) is capable of pulling off the upset as they did several years ago when the Oilers looked like they were going to run away with the game, but wound up losing in overtime.
But this year’s Pearland team (7-3, 4-2) wasn’t going to allow history to repeat itself.
Pearland scored first on a 23-yard Marcus Richard run giving the Oilers a 7-0 lead.
Brazoswood tied up the game 7-7 on a 1-yard Dillon Tolbert plunge.
The Oilers took a 14-7 halftime lead into the dressing room thanks to a 38-yard punt return for a touchdown by Debione Renfro.
Brazoswood tied up the game with 5:30 left in the third quarter when A.J. Casas caught a screen pass and raced 42-yards to the Pearland one-yard line. A play later, Casas punched the ball across the goal line making the score 14-14.
Pearland pushed the lead in the fourth quarter to 21-14 when they went on a nine-play drive capped by an 18-yard scoring run by Jaelin Benefield.
Later on in the period, QB Jacob Whitehead hit Daniel Petty for a 37-yard touchdown strike to give the Oilers a 28-14 advantage.
Brazoswood added a harmless 45-yard field goal as time expired allowing the Oilers to escape with the victory.
Pearland finished the game with 303 yards of total offense.
Whitehead was 11-of-13 passing for 135 yards and one TD.
Pearland’s regular season is now complete and the Oilers will have this Friday open before preparing for the first round of the playoffs. It appears that the Oilers will meet District 24-6A champions Clear Springs, a team they defeated in the season opener 28-24.
Time and place will be announced at a later date though it appears they will play at the new Challenger Columbia Stadium in League City.
