The Manvel High School football team had a new captain for Friday night’s game vs. Texas City High School. Rear Adm. Kenneth Iverson took the field with the Manvel Mavericks as the honorary captain.
“We were contacted by the Navy saying that during the Houston airshow, Rear Adm. Iverson would be in town for Navy Week and would love to attend our football game. We were honored,” said Alvin ISD Athletic Director, Michael Bass.
Rear Adm. Iverson is a native of Longview, Texas, earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He received his commission in 1986. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit (two), Meritorious Service Medal (four), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, in addition to other personal and unit awards.
Before the game, Rear Adm. Iverson spoke to the Manvel HS Jr. ROTC and even led them in cadence from their classroom to the stadium where they presented the colors before the game. Dr. Buck Gilcrease, Superintendent for Alvin ISD, and Dr. Cynthia Lusignolo, Superintendent for Texas City ISD, were both in attendance and presented Iverson with tokens of appreciation on behalf of both school districts. Iverson then walked around and shook hands with fans.
“It was phenomenal having Rear Adm. Iverson attend our game. Alvin ISD and our fans have so much respect for our military and it really showed in the amount of applause he received. It was a wonderful evening,” said Gilcrease.
