New school hours begin

With a new plan to finish with classes before Memorial Day weekend, campus hours within Pearland ISD take effect this week.

Classes resumed from winter break on Tuesday, with all grade levels in school for 5 more minutes per day for the remainder of the year. The added time means the year will be finished by Friday, May 26, and seniors are set to graduate the same day at NRG Stadium.

Ending the year before Memorial day is has been a “strong direction” from the board and others for at least a year, Superintendent John Kelly said. The board last February put off final approval of the school calendar, hoping to find a way to end the year before the three-day holiday that traditionally signals the start of summer vacation.

Doing so now requires some shuffling of schedules for graduation, and school officials said there will need to be much coordination to pull off commencement ceremonies at NRG in Houston the same day classes end.

Elementary school hours are 8 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.; middle and junior schools from 8:35 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., high schools from 7:15 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. and the Pace Center from 8:40 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.

The change to the school hours and the 2017 calendar was approved by the board on Nov. 15. To view the revised academic calendar, visit pearlandisd.org.

The board of trustees will meet this year on Jan. 17 (modified date), Feb. 14, March 7 (changed due to Spring Break), April 11, May 23 and June 13 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Education Support Center, 1928 North Main St.
