Dawson junior guard Teshuna Lockhart fired four long range shots against Brazoswood missing the first three. But the last shot she took from beyond the arc was with 8.4 seconds left in the district game and the two teams were tied at 33-33.
That when Lockhart found nothing but net giving the Lady Eagles a 36-33 lead which would ultimately turn out to be the game winner as Brazoswood wasn’t able to hit their final shot to tie up the game.
Lockhart finished the game with seven points, but none as important as the trey that she hit in the clutch.
Dawson improves to 10-13 overall and 2-2 in the district standing as the first round will continue on Friday, January 13 when the Lady Eagles will host Alief Elsik at 7:00 p.m.
“This was a very important win for our team,” Dawson head coach Isabel Gomez said. “We are maturing as a team and the girls are developing much needed chemistry as we strive to compete with the ultimate goal of making the playoffs this season.”
Dawson led 11-10 after the opening period as Taylor Morris and Liz Davis led the offense with five and four points respectively.
The Lady Eagles took the second quarter 9-4 as Jada Rogers took control of the Dawson offense scoring all nine points for a 20-14 halftime lead.
But the Lady Bucs were going to go away that easy as they rallied to outscore the Lady Eagles 11-5 in the third quarter to tie up the game 25-25 entering the final eight minutes of the game.
The teams battled back and forth in the final stanza until the game was tied at 33-33 with 8.4 seconds left setting up the game-winning shot by Lockhart and the 36-33 win.
Rogers finished as the leading scorer for Dawson with 15 points followed by Lockhart who had seven points and Morris who finished with five points.
George Ranch 57 – Dawson 43
The Lady Eagles faced the George Ranch Lady Longhorns (14-6, 3-1) in the first game of the new year losing 57-43.
George Ranch came out red hot on offense to grab a 22-11 first quarter lead and continued to take the second period 13-8 for a 35-19 lead at intermission.
Dawson began to find their rhythm on offense taking the third quarter 12-9 to cut the lead to 44-31 entering the final stanza.
George Ranch closed out any comeback effort with a 13-12 fourth quarter and the 57-43 win.
Ka’Lynn Broadnax led the Dawson offense with 12 points while Camryn Perry scored eight and Liz Davis added seven points.
Dawson was only 9-for-21 at the free throw line (41%) which hurt them offensively.
