It was a battle of the unbeatens in District 23-5A when the Manvel Lady Mavericks and the Ball High Lady Tors faced one another is a district showdown.
The game featured two tough teams highlighted that turned into a gritty defensive struggle.
Both offenses struggle with turnovers that were caused by defensive pressure.
Ball High emerged out of the opening eight minutes with a 10-9 lead as both teams committed a combined 11 turnovers including six by Manvel.
Ball High committed only two more the rest of the way while Manvel continued to struggle yielding 10 more miscues the final three quarters.
The game went back-and-forth in the first half, but a 7-2 run in the final two minutes gave Manvel a 23-19 lead at intermission thanks to three-pointers by Joy Chanslor and McKinzie Green.
Ball High rallied early in the second half for a 25-23 lead, but the Lady Tors went on an eight minute scoring drought that allowed the Lady Mavs to regain the lead 30-25 early in the final quarter.
Manvel up the lead to 32-27 when Ball High hit their only 3-pointer of the game to close the gap to 32-30 with 36.9 seconds left in the game.
The Lady Mavs closed out the game going 3-for-4 at the charity stripe to come away with the win to remain undefeated in league action 35-32.
Green was the leading scorer for Manvel with eight points while Deja Williams added seven points including two clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter.
Manvel 47 – Texas City 35
The Manvel Lady Mavericks improved to 8-0 in district play when they defeated Texas City 47-35.
Texas City took an early 9-6 first quarter lead, but the Lady Mavs bounced back with a 20-6 second quarter run for a 26-15 halftime lead.
The second half turned into a back-and-forth affair with the score tied 10-10 in the third quarter with Manvel hanging on to a 36-25 advantage entering the final period.
Manvel edged the Lady Stings 11-10 down the stretch for the 47-35 final score and win.
