January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas and Alvin, Friendswood and Pearland ISDs are joining other districts across the state to thank local leaders for their dedication and willingness to serve as advocates for children and public schools. This year’s state theme is Champions for Kids.
The board functions as the district’s policy-making body, with administrative staff carrying out the policies set by the board. Trustees model effective school board practices, working as a team to benefit the districts’ students.
Pearland ISD will honor their all-star team — the seven school board members who serve and support students while partnering with administration to lead the district at their regular board meeting Jan. 17.
The board of trustees includes President Rebecca Decker, Vice President Sean Murphy, Secretary Lance Botkin and members Jeff Barry, Pam Boegler, Rusty DeBorde and Charles Gooden Jr.
“Board members often make difficult decisions, yet their ultimate goal is always focused on the success of all students. Our school board members are involved, dedicated and often self-sacrificing with their time. It’s an honor to work with them,” Dr. John Kelly, Pearland ISD Superintendent, said.
Dr. Kelly will present each board member with a certificate of appreciation during the recognition portion of the January board meeting. Thanks will be posted on the district website and marquee on 518.
Pearland schools are invited to do something to recognize board members. In previous years, board members have received cute notes from students, a giant card from a school signed by all the kids, treats and other things.
For the past few years, Dawson High School has invited board members to attend a luncheon prepared by Culinary Arts students in the Eagle’s Nest Café. Board members also enjoy getting to talk to kids about their experience in the program.
