It’s Mardi Gras time in Pearland and Women in Leadership Society of Pearland look forward to letting the good times roll at their 13th annual fundraiser, Bunco 2017 set for Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Pearland from 2 – 4 p.m.
Participants are encouraged to wear their best Mardi Gras costume and come ready to play, have fun and help women and children in need in Brazoria County.
The annual fundraiser is held each year to earn funds to provide scholarships and emergency assistance to single women and their children, helping them achieve independent living in Brazoria County.
In 2003, WLS was formed in conjunction with the United Way of Brazoria County. In 2010, the group became its own charitable 501c3. The group is made up of volunteers only with no paid staff or office facilities. The group meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Pearland.
The group has given more than $80,000 in educational scholarships. Over 50 mothers and 135 children have been helped through emergency assistance since 2012.
The organization also works with Christmas in Pearland through donations and donates backpacks for the YMCA Backpack Program.
Early bird tickets for Bunco 2017 are $25 and must be purchased by Jan. 29. Regular tickets are $35 per person. The event is popular and the community is urged to secure their spots soon, according to WLS member Sally Mercer.
