It comes as no surprise that the Friendswood boys and girls captured the 2016-2017 District 24-6A swim championships. Now the Mustangs will prepare to compete at the 6A regionals and then move on to the UIL state swim meet in Austin.
Friendswood’s Sydney Gurry was named Girls Swimmer of the Meet and Michael Claunch was named Boys Diver of the Meet and Coach Haffelder was named Diving Coach of the Meet.
Head coach John Little and head coach Aubrey Estes shared Girls Coach of the Year and Little was named Boys Coach of the Year.
As a team, Friendswood won the combined title with 295 points with Clear Falls coming in second with 231 points.
“The team managed to stay totally in focus with the moment and not be so concerned with the scores,” said head coach John Little. “They were fantastic about doing the best they could on that day and in the events.”
The girls won the team championship with 130 points followed by Clear Lake (122), Clear Falls (77), Clear Springs (72), Clear Creek (69), Alvin (32), Clear Brook (30) and Dickinson (12).
The boys won the team championship with 165 points edging Clear Falls (164) followed by Clear Lake (73), Clear Springs (60), Clear Creek (44), Dickinson (22), Clear Brook (18), and Alvin (12).
The Friendswood girls quartet of Allison Proul, Sydney Gurry, Olivia Theall, and Sadie Wilson captured the 200-yard Medley Relay in 1:47.73 which was a new pool record.
The Friendswood boys foursome of Max Hardt, Nico Monroig, Mark Theall, and Josh Haffelder won the 200-yard Medley Relay in 1:36.14 which was a new pool record.
Sydney Gurry won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.01 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.10.
Mark Theall won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.21 and the 100-yard butterfly in 49.94.
Max Hardt won the 200-yard Individual Medley in 1:53.72.
Sadie Wilson won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.36 and the 100-yard freestyle in 53.43.
Michael Claunch won the 1-meter diving with 426.15 points edging teammate Brandon De La Fuente who scored 418.30 points.
Olivia Theall won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.54.
Josh Haffelder won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.02.
The Friendswood girls foursome of Gurry, Allie Hanson, Theall, and Wilson won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:39.05.
Other Friendswood swimmers advancing to region are: Josh Haffelder (200 IM), Thomas McHenry (50 and 100 free), Gabriel Costa (diving), Joey Alfonso (butterfly), Hamad ElSaddi (butterfly and backstroke), Allison Proul (500 freestyle and backstroke), Joe Sloan (500 freestyle), Peyton Davis (breaststroke).
Other Friendswood scorers were: Mady Blok (200 free), Joey Alfonso (200 free), Allie Hansen (200 IM and 100 breast), Joe Sloan (200 IM), Evan Metcalf (50 free), Noah Geno (500 free).
“Regionals will be different than the last couple of years so we have to see how it all falls out,” Little said. “The new district in our region is very good. We have a number of swimmers and divers in a great position to score well at region and hopefully advance to the state meet.”
