The 16th annual Alvin ISD Education Foundation Turtle Race and the 5th annual Family Fun Run/Walk is this Saturday, Feb. 11, at National Oak Park in Alvin.
Registration for the Family Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by Kelsey Seybold, is going on now. Entry fee for the 1k Kids (up to age 11) Run/Walk is $15. Entry fee for a student for the 5k Run/Walk is $20 and for an adult the fee is $30. The race will begin at 9 a.m. and participants will receive the Turtle Race 2017 t-shirt. This year the 5k course has been officially certified by US Track & Field and the race will be a timed event, with results available after the race. The entry form can be found at signmeup.com. Race day sign-in begins at 8:00 a.m. at the National Oak Park pavilion. Foundation President Amy Roudbari said, “The Fun Run has grown and become a great addition to the Turtle Race, we love seeing school groups and families all having fun together.”
All the event fun begins at 10 a.m. when the booths open, after the Turtle Fun Run, with food, games, giveaways, and more. Booth space is available for concessions and vendors. Booths are 10 x 10 and are available for $20 for non-profits and $30 for all others.
At noon the adopted (plastic) turtles will race! Community members, parents, students and staff are encouraged to adopt turtles for the race. Turtles can be adopted for $5 each at all Alvin ISD campuses, the Alvin ISD Central Administration Building, Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce, YMCA of Alvin, Alvin Community College and TDEC, Inc. Turtles may also be adopted online at www.alvinisd.net/educationfoundation. When you adopt a turtle you are getting a chance to be a winner, each adoption is linked to one of the numbered plastic turtles that are used on race day. The adopter of the first turtle to cross the finish line wins a travel voucher valued at $1,500, sponsored by Stantec. The second place prize is a $1,000 shopping spree sponsored by David and Tracy Vela, and the third place prize is an iPad valued at $500 sponsored by Ron Carter Automotive Dealerships. Eight other valuable prizes will be awarded to the adopters of subsequent turtles to cross the finish line. Sponsorships are being accepted to help with expenses and prizes, contact the Foundation office for information. If weather does not permit the race to take place, a drawing will be held to determine winners.
All proceeds from the Turtle Race benefit the students and teachers in the Alvin ISD through Innovative Teaching Grants, campus grants, and scholarships for students, teachers and paraprofessionals. “This is wonderful event that brings together the entire Alvin ISD community,” said Sheila Olson the Foundation executive director. “This event would not be possible without the help of Alvin ISD, the City of Alvin, generous sponsors and community partners and we appreciate everyone who has a part in making this a fun day that allows the Foundation to make a difference in Alvin ISD.”
The Foundation is a partner for the Alvin ISD Book Bus and made the initial $10,000 donation to get the project started and donated another $10,000. Last year the Foundation gave back over $141,000 to Alvin ISD and this year they plan to do more with the communities help.
