The Pearland Lady Oilers continued their path in the Class 6A Region III basketball playoffs with a 57-56 overtime win over the Clear Lake Lady Falcons and a solid 62-46 victory over the Atascocita Lady Eagles to advance to the Region III quarterfinals.
Pearland will now face No. 2 state-ranked Clear Springs in the quarterfinals. The Lady O’s are a young team and will need their best game of the season if they are to advance to the next round. The Lady Oilers came away with a hard-fought 57-56 win over Clear Lake in overtime. The game was filled with back-and-forth action while Pearland also had to overcome some of the worst officiating they had faced all season.
Pearland led after the first quarter 16-11 as freshman Deyona Gaston fired in nine points.
The Lady Oilers led 29-26 at intermission after Clear Lake rallied 15-13.
Pearland nipped Clear Lake after three quarters 14-13 making the score 43-39 entering the final period.
The Lady Falcons used the 3-point bomb to make the four-point difference as they tied up the score 51-51 at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Lake connected on seven 3-pointers while Pearland also used the shot from downtown with five long-range shots.
In the end, it would be Gaston who would take over the extra period scoring all six of Pearland’s points while Clear Lake scored only five to make the final 57-56.
Gaston finished with 24 points while Macey Braswell tossed in 14 and Jocelyn Thompson added 10.
Pearland 63 – Atascocita 42
Pearland charged out to a 19-2 lead and was never challenged in taking a 63-42 win over Atascocita in a Class 6A area round girls’ basketball game.
Freshman Deyona Gaston scored a game-high 27 points and sophomore guard Macey Braswell added 18 as the Lady Oilers improved to 27-8.
The Lady Oilers led 19-6 after one quarter and 27-14 at halftime. Gaston was hot on offense in the opening half as she had 10 points in the first period and four points in the second for 14 first-half points. Gaston was 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the game.
Pearland increased the margin to 42-26 after three quarters and continued to pull away in the final period.
Ravae Payne added eight points for Pearland while Julia Gonzales scored six and Jocelyn Thompson contributed four points.
