The 16th Annual Turtle Race and 5th Annual Fun Run sponsored by the Alvin ISD Education Foundation included 13,035 plastic turtles swimming down Mustang Bayou and 539 runners in the 5K and 1K races. This event brought in over $90,000 and the profit will fund Innovative Teaching Grants, student and teacher scholarships and much more throughout Alvin ISD.
“It was a beautiful day and hundreds of people showed up to watch the turtles race and cheer on the runners,” said Alvin ISD Education Foundation Board member and Turtle Race chairperson Mary Jane Crumm.
The winning turtle was adopted by Ethan Lopez, a first grade student at Don Jeter Elementary and he won a $1,500 travel voucher provided by Stantec. Olivia Barajas, a student at Mark Twain Elementary, won the second prize of a $1,000 shopping spree provided by David and Tracy Vela, and Lee Withers won the third place IPad Mini provided by Ron Carter.
Other winners were fourth place won by Veena Menezes who received a weekend stay at Hilton Garden Inn Pearland, Kendra Scott jewelry and a Nothing Bundt Cake; Caterina Dingas who won fifth place which includes 4 HLSR tickets to Aaron Watson and a $100 Whataburger gift card; Katy Garza in sixth place with a collection of Kendra Scott jewelry, Steve Williams who won seventh place which is two Astros tickets donated by TDEC Inc., Electrical Contractor and an autographed George Spring photo, Mikayla Gibson in eighth place with four Schlitterbahn tickets and four SeaWorld tickets; John Cunningham in ninth place with eight Museum of Natural Science tickets and four Houston Children’s Museum tickets, Bill Hasse in tenth place with a two Wake Nation passes, five MSR Houston passes and one month pass to Camp Gladiator and eleventh place was Peggy Osbon with Sam’s Club snack basket and McDonalds gift card.
The last place turtle is appropriately called the ‘Slowest Swimmer’, and that spot when to Timothy Holley who received Whataburger Gift Cards.
Winners of the Turtle Race Family Fun Run were for the Kids Aden Saucedo in first place, second place was Caleb Moore and Evan Hanson was third. In the 5K there were four categories. Winners in the 5K female 12 and under were first place Kaylyn Tucker, second place Sarah Walla and third place Brook Reynolds. For the female 13 and over first place was Aleathia Rakowitz, second was Julie Williams and third place was Sheridan Schmidt. The 5K male winners were first place Duke Butler, second place Anthony Salazar and third place Ryan Garcia. The male 13 and over winners were first place Pedro Flores, second place Hector Ramirez and third place Joshua Pantoja.
