District met standards on Texas Academic Report

February is Career and Technical Education Month and a group of Alvin ISD students were on hand to celebrate their accomplishments. CTE aims to build foundation skills, core work place competences and specific skill competences in various occupational areas. Darcy Hanson with Alvin High School is the HOSA Health Science Area 2 President and thanked the board members for their continued support of CTE programs across the district. Meagan Beasley with Alvin High School is the FCCLA President thanked the board and presented them with aprons made by the Alvin High School advanced fashion design class.

The District Spelling Bee was won by Eleana Jett, a 4th grader from Hasse Elementary. Eleana will now go on to the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee on April 1. Alvin ISD Fine Arts program had nine students to show case their art work at the Live Stock Show and Rodeo and were congratulated for their outstanding work.

Carla James, a teacher at E.C. Mason, co-authored the book “Guided by Meaning in Primary Literacy,” and Ralph Pressley, a teacher at Wilder Elementary, published a book titled “Can We Get Back?” These teachers were acknowledged for their contributions.

A presentation was made on the Texas Academic Performance Report.

This report contains well over a hundred pages, and can be found on the Alvin ISD website. In this report, Alvin ISD has received the highest rating that the state awards, which was MET STANDARDS.

Dr. Gilcrease pointed out that the requirements to meet these standards for the 2016-2017 report were just received, though school has been in attendance since August 2016.

Trustee Election dates will be Saturday, May 6. Positions open this year will be Position 6, Earl Humbird and Position 7, Vivian Scheibel. Elections are held in conjunction with Brazoria County to share expense of voting booths and materials.

The Academic Calendar for the 2017 – 2018 year was approved. There are about sixty members on the committee made up of teachers, parents and community members met for the past six months to come up with this calendar.

Road construction funds for the District Stadium in Manvel were approved as well as the contract for road construction.

The principal at E.C. Mason Elementary was named and will be Dixie Jones from Red Duke Elementary.
