It is hard for a game to be played when the officials don’t show up. Such was the case when Manvel was to play Beaumont Ozen in the Class 5A Region III area round.
Instead of the game being played last Friday, the game was re-scheduled the next day on Saturday in Atascocita.
Despite the inconvenience of having to get ready a day later, the Manvel Mavericks still prevailed with a 77-60 victory that sends them to the Region III Quarterfinals against district foe Fort Bend Elkins on Tuesday (late).
The Mavs jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead and never looked back.
Manvel’s Jalen Preston led the charge with nine points including a 3-point bomb.
The game got a little closer with Manvel taking the second period 16-12 giving them a 32-20 lead at intermission.
Beaumont Ozen tried to get back in the game as they cut the lead in the third quarter 16-12 sending the teams to the final frame with Manvel ahead 44-36.
AJ McBride kept the Mavs in the lead during the Panthers attempt to rally. McBride had a 3-pointer, a short jumper, and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe for eight of his 14 points.
But the Mavs put the game away in the final eight minutes 33-24 giving them the 77-60 victory.
Preston was once again the catalyst that helped push the Mavs to victory with 17 fourth-quarter points. He finished with a game-high 30 points while going 9-for-9 from the line.
Lester Powers finished with 11 points.
