The Friendswood ISD regularly scheduled meeting April 10 of the FISD School Board was held in their new board room at the Annex, the building adjacent to the Administration building on Laurel. The Annex was formerly Friendswood Junior High School.

The district had outgrown the former board room and small parking lot at 302 Laurel, according to district officials.

In October 2016, the board approved the concept of the renovation of the annex cafeteria space into a new board room using FISD Maintenance staff and required sub-contractors. This renovation included the two restrooms in the hallway outside of the existing cafeteria and the entire entry hallway leading to the cafeteria and going outside to the District’s Transition Center, also renovated from the former Friendswood Junior High facility.

The new room offers four times the space of the old space and can now seat 200 with standing room in the back.

At the April 10 meeting, approximately 150 students and staff were honored and were able to all be inside the Board room for the recognition, something the old space did not offer.

The former board room will be renovated in the future to house additional administrative offices including the replacement of offices currently in portable buildings.

The expenditure amount for the renovation is approximately $204,000 which is $60,000 from final remaining bond funds and the remainder from the Capital Project Fund.

FISD Maintenance staff completed all the wall recovering, door and door hardware installs, painting, vent re-routing, electrical work, and ceiling tile replacement.

“They have done an amazing job and saved the District thousands of dollars in labor costs. An initial architectural firm estimate for the renovation of the cafeteria space into a board room and two restrooms in 2014 was nearly $700,000,” Superintendent Trish Hanks said.
